Draft:Training:LIB Sweatbox

From ZNY Wiki

Liberty Departure Training Files

General Topics
  • Discuss East and North and run NE Sweatbox first before progressing to West and South and the SW Sweatbox.
  • Handoff planes early (both radar tags and comms tag). The goal is to keep planes climbing without stopping 16000 or 17000 if there's no traffic in the way. Handing planes off early allows Center to climb airplanes out of your airspace and make more room for your planes
  • Emphasize checking for conflicts before climbing aircraft. It's very easy to climb an EWR departure into an LGA departure, or an LGA departure into a JFK departure. Be conservative and protect yourself in case a plane climbs slowly or stops climbing entirely and levels off (ex: engine failure)
  • Emphasize actually checking the aircraft type, exit fix, and filed altitude before issuing instructions. Don't assume
  • Know what turns prior to the airspace boundary or gate are allowed via the LOA (described in the procedures tab in each sector)

East
  • Discuss DEEZZ departure procedure
  • Discuss managing LGA East Gate and JFK North Gate separation
    • LGA climbing to 10000
    • JFK at or above 11000 climbing to 17000
    • Can climb LGA departures up to 12000 under LENDY or 17000 past the LGA/LENDY boundary
    • Check for conflicts with JFK departures before climbing LGA departures
  • Discuss how to sequence East Gate departures, especially with a heavy BOS arrival flow on the ROBUC
    • Do not need to sequence GREKI and MERIT as one, sequence each fix individually instead
    • Speed control (no less than 250 kts above 10000). Needs to be canceled or pilot instructed to inform next controller of speed on handoff
    • Climb to 12000 (to meet airspace floor) and turn north, no further west than about 010 heading to remain in East airspace
    • Can turn JFK departures to the left as long as they pass through the combined East/North gate
    • Boston Center can issue right turns above 13000, direct PROVI is a common shortcut on the ROBUC, can use that to build space by handing off to Boston early and watching for the right turn

North
  • Discuss 16000 max altitude for EWR and LGA departures (different from when LIB is offline)
  • Turn planes to the east to build space as needed but be aware of LGA DEP and NYACK airspace

West
  • Be aware of airspace, don't climb departures into LENDY airspace (above 15000)
  • Discuss which planes can be stacked
    • BIGGY departures BWI under DCA under any traffic climbing above FL220
    • PARKE departures IAD under traffic climbing above FL220
  • Discuss being proactive and stepping planes up underneath each other when there are multiple streams of crossing traffic (EWR under LGA)

South
  • Be aware of crossing traffic over COL
  • Use speed differential between LGA climbing traffic and EWR traffic sitting at 6000 to build space over WHITE if needed

Operating the Sweatbox Scenario
  • Climb aircraft that have been handed off on comms to enroute
  • Issue direct PROVI to ROBUC arrivals as appropriate
  • Run NE Sweatbox at least until KLM642 is handed off to Boston Center. May run longer as needed
  • Run SW Sweatbox at least until AAL1506 and AAL1389 are sequenced over WHITE. May run longer as needed
  • Route fixes:
    • Aircraft are programmed to spawn on an assigned gate heading by flying direct to a fix beyond the exit fixes
    • ATC Trainer is configured to have aircraft continue on their route once sent direct to the exit fix
