Mentor-in-Training (MIT) Guide
This document serves as a guide for the probationary period of Mentor-in-Training, outlining requirements and expectations to successfully transition into a mentor in the training staff.
Overview
- The MIT period is a probationary period during which candidates demonstrate professional development and teaching proficiency. Upon recommendation by the Facility Coordinator (FC), Assistant Training Administrator (ATA), or Training Administrator (TA), a candidate may join the training staff. The MIT holds this role until specific competencies are independently demonstrated.
Mentor-in-Training (MIT) Requirements
- Maintain Discipline and Professionalism
- Uphold a high standard of professionalism in all interactions with students
- Foster a positive and respectful learning environment
- Develop a teaching approach
- Formulate a teaching philosophy and approach that aligns with ZNY and VATUSA standards
- The Level Specific Training Criteria should be used as a guide
- Familiarize with Sweatbox Commands and Scenarios
- Achieve proficiency in using ATCTrainer
- Familiarize yourself with specific scenarios to enhance teaching abilities
- Supervised Training Sessions
- Collaborate with the FC (or TA/ATA) to schedule supervised training sessions
- Receive constructive feedback during these sessions to aid in development
- Online Presence and Monitoring
- Maintain an active online presence within the facility and on VATSIM
- Monitor students’ online controlling to ensure alignment with ZNY and VATUSA standards
- Teaching Commitment
- Commit to teaching at least one session per month
- Successfully complete each session according to predetermined standards
- Competency Milestones
- Demonstrate the ability to:
- Handle ATCTrainer
- Scan efficiently
- Teach effectively
Promotion and Unsatisfactory Performance
- The TA, in conjunction with the ATA, will promote a Mentor-in-Training (MIT) to a Mentor based on demonstrated competencies
- In the event that performance is deemed unsatisfactory, the Mentor-in-Training will meet with the TA/ATA to discuss the next steps and determine an appropriate course of action
